The Department of Industrial Fish and Fisheries of Govt. Degree College Kathua celebrated World Fisheries day on 21 st November 2022 as the day is celebrated worldwide annually by the Fisheries community to raise awareness about sustainable management of global fisheries.
Principal, Prof. Sumanesh Jasrotia appreciated the role of the Department of Industrial Fish and Fisheries and told media that Fisheries is one of the unique subjects run by this College and is most preferred by the students, especially in the new education policy recently launched in the state as this subject meet all the standards of the policy, as it gives opportunity to the students even of Arts stream to include one science subject in their skill and multidisciplinary course and it is great to watch that most of the students from other disciplines besides science have chosen.
Fisheries which gives a clear indication that the students understand the need of future to be self-dependent and entrepreneurs and learning this subject can not only fetch them a golden opportunity to be self-dependent but they can also generate the employment for the others as it is being pressed upon by N.E.P. and is also our worthy Prime minister’s Aatam Nirbhar Bharat dream.

He congratulated and appreciated the efforts of Dr. Jageshwar Dutt Saroch, Head of the Department of Industrial Fish & Fisheries who told the media that the overall programme was carried out under the guidance of Principal, Prof. Sumanesh Jasrotia and the students of semester first participated in the event which included poster making competition depicting the theme of sustainable fishing and making the people aware of importance and problems of aquatic resources. He said that the day is celebrated every year with flying colours but this year it was unique as the students from other streams like Arts and Non-medical have chosen the subject and wholeheartedly participated in the programme.
Further, the department organized an educational field trip to the National Fish Seed Farm (NFSF) Kathua which is one of the largest Seed production farms in Northern India supplying quality and quantity of carp fish seeds to the water bodies of Jammu and Kashmir Union territory.
About 100 students of Semester First of the Department participated in the field trip which was flagged off by the Principal of the college Prof. Sumanesh Jasrotia in presence of Senior Faculty members of the college Prof Seema Malpotra, Prof Raj Kiran, Prof Jasvinder Singh, Prof. Shub Kumar, Dr. Suraya Pratap Singh, Dr. Ram-krishan, Prof. Rajesh Kumar, Prof. Reetika Rani, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Dr. Amrik Singh, Prof. Manmohan Singh and Prof. Kourab Singh.
The Chief Project Officer of NFSF, Sh. Gopal Krishan welcomed the students and accompanying faculty of the College followed by an informative lecture on World Fisheries day and the role of Govt. in providing assistance to Fish farmers and entrepreneurs while Additional Director Fisheries Sh. Pawan Pal Sharma and Sh. Sandeep Raina (Farm manager, NFSF)
briefed about the farm activities.
The students were overwhelmed and told the media that the event boosted their morale and they are looking forward to making use of their resources and putting their efforts by learning about Fisheries in the college in order to become self-employed and can provide Employment to others too.
