GDC Kathua is organizing a Workshop on “Virtual Labs in Chemical Sciences”

Virtual Lab Nodal Centre (VLNC), which IIT Bombay established in Govt. Degree College Kathua organized a “Virtual Labs in Chemical Sciences” workshop. A large number of students and faculty members participated in the event. Prof. Rakesh Singh, Head of the Department of Chemistry, GDC Kathua, was the resource person at the event.

Prof. Sumanesh Jasrotia, Principal, Govt. Degree College Kathua welcomed the resource person, students and dignitaries. In his welcome address, he congratulated all the participants for establishing VLNC in GDC Kathua. All science teachers, as well as students, are encouraged to use the virtual labs as add on to the physical labs. He appreciated the efforts taken by the virtual lab team of GDC Kathua and expressed that it will help students and faculty better understand this burning topic.

The technical session, which included a demonstration and hands-on session of simulation-based experiments in Chemical Sciences, was conducted by resource person Professor Rakesh Singh, Head, Department of Chemistry, GDC Kathua. He elaborated in detail to the students in the Workshop how to use the Vlab and perform simulation-based experiments.

He further explained to the students three simulation-based experiments, such as the Determination of Viscosity of organic liquids, Working of Spectrophotometer and Acid-Base titrations, developed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, through virtual mode very efficiently. Students keenly watched the simulation-based experiments. The resource person efficiently responded to queries raised by students.

In his introductory talk, Dr Pankaj Gupta, Nodal Coordinator, VLNC, gave details of various features, objectives and advantages of Virtual Lab, a mission project developed under the aegis of National Mission on Education through ICT, MHRD. He said that with the rapid growth of information and communication technologies (ICT), virtual laboratories are becoming an integral part of the science and technology curriculum.

He said that such type of initiative is very much required at this time of industrial 4.0 revolution, which requires learning towards the internet of things, digitalization, machine learning etc. and for that, we need to be creative and critical. . He said that Physical distances and lack of resources often make it difficult to perform experiments, especially when they involve sophisticated instruments.

Prof. Raj Kiran Sharma, Associate Professor in Physics, also spoke on occasion and motivated the students to take the best advantage of this platform which involves experiments through virtual modes. He congratulated the organizing team for the successful organization of the vent.

An impressive vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Anoop Sharma, Technical Coordinator, VLNC Govt Degree College Kathua.

The whole event was organized under the overall supervision of Prof. Sumanesh, Principal, GDC Kathua and by the combined efforts of Dr Pankaj Gupta (Organizing Secretary), Prof. Anoop (Co-organizing secretary), Dr Anupama Sharma, Dr Ambica, Dr Upasna Andotra, Dr Roshan Lal, Prof. Neha Mahajan, Dr Narayan, Dr Nisha, and Dr Tanya.

The others who were present were Prof. Seema Malpotra, Prof. Deepshikha, Prof. Surabhi Mahajan, Prof. Surabhi Gupta, Prof. Rachna, and Dr Jogbinder Singh.
