Produced by Ben Steiner, Hulu’s ‘Matriarch is an esoteric movie of horror that centers on Laura Birch (Jemima Rooper), an ad executive with a high-flying career who becomes overwhelmed by the work she does. After an overdose of cocaine, she begins to believe that a godlike creature has saved her.
But Laura soon starts showing signs of a mysterious illness. So her Mother, who is estranged from her, Celia (Kate Sheryl Crowe), is urging her to return home; she reluctantly accepts and hopes that her time in the house she lived in as a child will allow her to gain control over her struggles.
However, this isn’t the case, and when Laura returns to her home village, she immediately recalls why she left. Additionally, she is aware that a dark force lurks within the idyllic village. The film “Matriarch” explores dark topics like addiction and dependency. If this has made you curious about the source of inspiration from actual incidents, we’ve got the answer.
Is Matriarch a True Story?
It’s not true, ‘Matriarch’ is not based on any real story or an adaptation of a novel. The horror film “Matriarch” has elements of the supernatural, and they overshadow the realistic aspects of the film. The film was created from a script written by Steiner.
It marks Steiner’s first foray as a film director for feature films. “I’ve been making short films for over twenty years,” director Ben Steiner told Bristol 24/7 in an interview with Bristol 24/7 on October 20, 2022.
Steiner said, “They were never just an instrument to get something done and regardless of whether I’m able to create more films, I’ll continue to make short films. But I’ve always hoped that they’d eventually be able to lead to a feature. Now they’ve done it.
It’s a dream that’s realized, which I’m trying my best to relish while frantically planning my next steps. I’ve got a lot of scripts that are ready (at least, that’s what I believe they are! ). So now I’m just looking for an editor and a few suitcases full of cash.”
In 2018, Steiner made a short movie titled ‘Urn, which showcased his talent as a horror filmmaker. The project was part of the season’s Huluween Film Fest, and the two films are based on an unhealthy mother-daughter bond. It was made through 20th Digital Studio, ‘Matriarch is among nine Hulu original films made by the filmmakers of 20th Digital’s Bite Size Halloween Roster.
In October 2022, the director explained to Geek Girl Authority that the source of ‘Matriarch”s inspiration came from ‘Urn’ noting, “…Then, Hulu requested that I make it a feature film, and I was thrilled to accept. “Matriarch” has nothing to do with Urn besides the harmful mother-daughter bond.
I’m from Bristol, which is located situated in west England. I’ve lived there for eight years. It’s yet to be fully embraced by me. I’m drawn to the landscape that surrounds me, wet, swampy, slippery, and mysteriously ancient. Then, I got attracted to it.”
Steiner revealed to the same publication that the goddess of his film, played in the film by Anna Frost, originated from a monster called the Worm Eater. “It’s based on a male monster called the Worm Eater,” Steiner explained. “The Worm Eater was the primary matriarchal type I’ve drawn several times.
A demon and anti-father frighten his son at midnight with this mouthful of insects and strange tentacles. He was interested in being involved in this. But he changed into the female once he got into this arena.”
Stein added, “It was only late when I realized that by combining the goddess” Mother, “mother,” the Laura character, and the Celia character, I had unintentionally created, or imagined, the archetype of triple goddesses: Maiden/Mother/Crone. Laura is the Maiden, and Celia is the Crone.
The goddess is the Mother.” The story of ‘Matriarch isn’t an authentic tale, although it has some truth-based elements.
