Srinagar-Leh highway closed for the fourth straight day

The 434-km strategic Srinagar-Leh national highway connecting the Ladakh region continued to remain shut for the fourth consecutive day on Monday.

Official Sources told the highway was closed on Friday following heavy snowfall at Zojila, Meenmarg, Gumri, Shaitani Nallah and other places on the highway.

BRO and Project Vijayak authorities were pressed into service and had launched a massive snow clearance operation from Drass (on Kargil) and Sonamarg (on the Zojila side) simultaneously, officials said. No movement of traffic was allowed keeping in view the safety and security of the commuters, the official said.

Sources said that a large number of vehicles are stranded on both sides of the Meenmarg and Sonamarg sides, which witnessed snowfall on Thursday. Traffic Police sources said that the Beacon authorities are on job to restore the highway. Traffic plying smoothly on Jammu-Srinagar NHW. Mughal road and SSG road are still closed, Tweeted J&K Traffic Police.
