For the latest stop motion animation film on Netflix, Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael Key will be back together as Wendell and Wild. This makes Halloween 2022 even more special. Henry Selick directs the film, having previously worked on movies in the same category as Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Peele produces the gig, and Lyric Ross, Angela Bassett and James Hong join the voice cast.
The storyline features Kat Elliot, the titular demons, and Kat Elliot, the “punk-rock-loving teen”. They urge the latter, who happens to be a Hell Maiden, to free them from the Land of the Dead.
The official description of the movie on Netflix is as follows:
TWO SCHEMING DEMONS STRIKE A DEAL WITH A PUNK ROCK-LOVING TEEN SO THEY CAN LEAVE THE UNDERWORLD AND LIVE OUT THEIR DREAMS IN THE LAND OF THE LIVING.
Sister Helley (Angela Bassett), who discovers the truth about Kat, asks her to keep it secret. She won’t be in a position to protect her against “her demons”. These demons then create an army of the Living to help them reach the Land of the Living. But Kat is willing to take control and doesn’t want anyone to interfere with her business.
Because she is afraid of “bad things” or worse, her friends will be unable to enter her life. What are horrors likely to disrupt the natural order of the Land of the Living’s existence? Will Kat rise to the occasion and take the difficult decisions that may be necessary? This Halloween season, all will be revealed. Keep watching for more.
The collaboration between Peele’s production team and Selick’s direction will be a huge success, given their previous projects that featured similar themes. It was also granted a platform at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept 11, 2022. The film received “generally positive” reviews on Metacritic before its Netflix release.
